The Oasis St. Luke’s Oasis Re-sale Shop has been in operation since 1985. We are one of the largest outreach and evangelistic ministries of St. Luke’s. We help serve the people of Polk County and surrounding counties and cities. We greatly aid those individuals who seek help from area organizations by providing good affordable clothing and household items. Donations are made to those needy individuals including fire and flood victims referred by other charity organizations such as Polk County Mission Center and CareShare. The women of the ECW and interested persons are asked to volunteer their time on Tuesdays, Fridays and the first Saturday of the month. It takes a lot of hard work and dedication by our volunteers to accomplish this outreach ministry of St. Luke’s. The work is rewarding, and the fellowship is great. If you have never been in our shop, come by and visit the Oasis director Paula Huisman or any of the “Oasis Angels” volunteers! Christian Education St. Luke’s Church has had a long-term commitment to education. Sunday School for all ages begins at 9:00 AM to 10:20 AM before Holy Eucharist. Toddlers up to 4 years of age are introduced to Jesus with a simple lesson for the day. Sunday School for ages 4 through high school utilize two curriculums: the One Room Sunday School for younger students and the Episcopal Children’s Curriculum for the older students. Both are based on the liturgical (scriptural) reading for the church calendar year. The Adult Sunday School is an on-going Bible Study currently discussing the Old Testament. Discussions include major elements of Christian belief as revealed by an examination of the Scriptures. Sunday School teachers include Travis Gibson, Rev. Carolyn Davis, Sandy Gilbert and Julie Howard. Join us for an informative and educational session! The Episcopal Churchwomen (ECW) The Episcopal Church Women is an organization with the purpose of encouraging women in their life in Christ; to promote their spiritual growth through fellowship in their faith; and to foster their active participation in the mission of the church. All the women communicants of the church are considered to be members. We meet the third Saturday from September to May at 10:30 AM in the Parish Hall. We enjoy an occasional informative presentation, organize support for various church functions and conduct business regarding our varied Outreach support within the area community, Diocese, and overseas Missions projects. We then enjoy our mutual fellowship over a Salad/ Pot Luck lunch! President Pat Hagerty and President-in-training Marjorie Juhasz welcome all inquiries and interested persons! The Altar Guild The Altar Guild is a group organized to serve God by preparing and tending to the Altar in preparation for Holy Eucharist, weddings, funerals, memorial services and other church services. Our duties include coordinating the Altar linens and hangings with the various church seasons, maintaining all Altar (and other) candles, preparing the Holy Eucharist elements, polishing and cleaning all brass and silver Eucharistic articles and making the weekly fresh-cut Altar floral arrangements. Our work is a thank offering of time and many talents and a ministry of love that is undertaken in the name of Christ. The current multi-talented Altar Guild Director Marion Mitchell would love to train anyone interested in volunteering for this very rewarding ministry. Daughters of the King (DOK) We are a group of Christian women dedicated to pray, work and give for the spread of Christ’s Kingdom. We are the St. Clare chapter with a membership of women who adopt a Rule of Life based on Prayer and Service. We pledge ourselves to a lifetime of daily prayer and service and personal evangelism. As part of our service we have pray daily for the healing of any person sick or in need. We avail ourselves at all times to those who mourn. We have a Daughters Prayer Chain, and anyone desiring a prayer is added to our list. Evangelism is part of our service as Daughters. During Euchrist, we serve as Intercessors leading the congregation in prayer. We try to live out our lives, in work and worship, conscious of Our Lord Jesus Christ and His help. It is through this service that we reach out to others and bring them into Christ’s redeeming relationship and into the fellowship of His church. DOK meets monthly. Director Kate Hillhouse welcomes your interest in joining the DOK in private and public prayer!
Episcopal Church Men (ECM) The Episcopal Church Men is a group within St. Luke’s who work to serve in fellowship and contemplations regarding our lives following Christ’s teachings. We meet monthly with an 8:00 AM Breakfast on the 3rd Sat. of the month, except for summer months in the Parish Hall. We converse on current topics, have presentations from community speakers and always discuss the various church projects requiring our talents. We host the annual Tuesday night Pancake Supper prior to Ash Wednesday and are very dedicated to our Annual Bar-B-Que event. Current President Monty Mitchell welcomes anyone interested in this fellowship. Layministers Layministers are members of the church family, who are able to assist the Priest with the church service. They read the lessons, psalms, assist the Priest, and otherwise assist in providing a smooth, uninterrupted service. Persons are trained for positions: Lector, one who reads the scriptures liturgically assigned for the service; Layreader, trained to lead public worship in absence of the Priest; Intercessor, one who leads the prayers of the people; Lay Eucharistic Minister (LEM) (Chalicebearer), one authorized to assist in the timely and orderly administration of the sacraments; Lay Eucharistic Minister to the Ill and Infirmed, a person trained to take communion to shut-ins and the infirmed following Sunday Services. Lay Minister Coordinator Kate Hillhouse would enjoy further explaining these ministries to anyone interested in serving the Lord and assisting with the services.
The Acolytes This Service ministry is both rewarding and beneficial for a smoothly conducted service. Acolytes have been a part of the Holy Eucharist since the days of the early Christian services. At St. Luke’s there are three positions for the Acolytes to serve. The role of Crucifer is to lead processions with the Processional Cross, gather alms basins, receive the elements for the priest, and assist at the altar as requested. The Server assists the priest at the altar during the Eucharist and during other special services. Torch Bearers escort the priest prior to the Gospel reading, and at time serve as Flag Bearers during special processions. There is no age limit to serve as Acolyte. Our acolytes are a very dedicated group who work well together. Acolyte Director Susan Tullos will gladly discuss this ministry and train interested persons! Episcopal Youth Community (EYC) The EYC is a church sponsored fellowship for our youth and friends grades 5 to 12. St. Luke’s EYC is also known as “The God Squad”. It was established to bring together our youth for loving fellowship with Christ and one another through our Outreach/Inreach programs. We meet the 1st Sunday of the month after morning services. On Wednesday evenings following Eucharist and Soup supper, we meet to discuss issues that face our youth everyday. You do not have to be a member of St. Luke’s to participate in our group. Youth Ministry directors Gladys Bohannon and Julie Howard welcome any interested youths!
