The Rt. Rev.
Don Adger Wimberly is the eighth Bishop of Texas. He formerly served as
Bishop of Lexington (Kentucky) for fifteen years, the assistant bishop for
East Texas for three years and coadjutor of Texas for one year. He was
invested as diocesan on June 28, 2003 and seated at Christ Church Cathedral
on June 29.
Congregational development, empowerment and development of leadership, both
lay and clergy is a major priority for Bishop Wimberly.
In addition
to Bishop Wimberly's work on a diocesan and regional level, he has served as
chancellor of the University of the South, Sewanee, TN., on the National
Executive Council of the Episcopal Church, Secretary of Program, Budget and
Finance; Chair of Administration and Finance, Chair of the Atlanta-based
Episcopal Media Center and on numerous other committees and commissions. He
has also served as a member and chair of the Commonwealth of Kentucky
Executive Branch Ethics Commission.
Bishop
Wimberly, a native of Louisiana, is a graduate of Louisiana State University
and the Virginia Theological Seminary (VTS). He was ordained deacon and
priest in 1971 and has served parishes in Williamsville, NY; Baton Rouge,
LA; Overland Park, KS and at the time of his election to the Episcopate, was
serving as dean of St. John's Cathedral in Jacksonville, Florida. He has
received Doctor of Divinity Degrees from VTS and the University of the
South. He and Wendy have two adult children both residing in Atlanta,
Georgia. |
