CONCEPT

To have this be a real analogy, we have to consider the correspondencies of the things that we are analogizing. In order to do that, we have to consider each of the components of the analogy and then put them together in a way that is reasonable and cogent for the person who is interested in this sort of thing.

We start with SOUND.

The concept of using SOUND as an Artistic substance could probably be traced back to prehistoric times. The first examples could have been the using of the voice to make variable tones that relayed the various emotions of the one doing the uttering. Man probably was no different than the animals around him when it came to being vocal. If one can make a SOUND, there will eventually be an emotion or the motivation to evoke that SOUND.

The concept of using LIGHT as an Artistic substance probably dates back to prehistoric times. The first examples could have been the noticing of and the minipulation of shadows when it was sunny, which were probably not greatly noticed by primitives at night due to the absence of a LIGHT source strong enough to cast shadows. The ubiquitousness of such daytime shadows probably made them accepted as just part of the lifescape, though there are a number of ancient beliefs concerning the shadow.

The basic difference in these two scenarios is:

In the instance of using SOUND as an Artistic substance, the one doing the using was actually "producing" the SOUND.

In the instance of using LIGHT as an Artistic substance, the one doing the using had to rely on an outside source for the production of the LIGHT.

The methods used to make SOUND were recorded as part of the "mythology" of MUSIC. Original efforts were generally attributed to "spiritual fauna", or "arch-typical" characters, and even to specifically named individuals of history.

An example of "spirit fauna" is the Muses, who were the nine daughters of Zeus and were the spirits who inspired the origination of the various kinds of MUSIC that were developed by the Greeks.

An example of an "arch- typical" characters would be Jubal, of the Bible, who was credited with inventing MUSIC for the first time in the history of mankind.

Later there would be actual historical characters such as: Pythagoras, who is reputed to have invented the vibrating string instrument when he notice that a string stretched across a tortise shell would resonate in relation to both it taughtness and length. There is some evidence that the bow (as in bow and arrows) was the inspiration for the resonating string.

So enamored with the resonating string was Pythagoras, that he decreed that it was the only "real" way to produce SOUND and that all other methods were inferior and in some instance detrimental to humans. He particularly disliked Horns and Trumpets.

Likewise, the methods used to make LIGHT (in this instance, fire) was also attributed to "spiritual fauna". The human ability to start and maintain a fire was attributed to Prometheus.

Prometheus, in violation of the prohibition on supplying humanity with fire, gave early man not only the knowledge of how to start fire, but how to maintain it and make it work. For this Prometheus was chained to a mountain where Eagles clawed his eyes out.

Regardless of how SOUND production really happened, the ability to make SOUND, inexorably led to the using of it to make beauty.

Regardless of of how LIGHT production really happened, the ability to make LIGHT, would also inexorably lead to the using of it to make beauty.

Eons of time would pass before the development of man would bring him to a condition of having the technology, along with enough time and leisure to start using LIGHT to make beauty.

None-the-less, it is a safe assumption that the concept of using SOUND as an Artistic substance predates the use of LIGHT as an Artistic substance, simply because the ability to make SOUND most certainly predates the ability to make LIGHT.

Man has always had the ability to make SOUNDS.

SOUND predates formal language. Primitive man used his voice and other means to produce SOUND.

Speculation that the results of striking rocks, some of which were most certainly resonant, was the first (after utterance, of course) way to make Artistic SOUNDS.

With this ability to make a percussive SOUND came the first step toward the making of MUSIC and that was the invention of rhythm. Even the most primitive of cultures have had a tendencey to rhythm and it is even highly developed in otherwise primitive and un-developed cultures.

Later would come the use of: Vibrating diaphragms (Drums, Tamborines, etc.); Vibrating strings (Harps, Lutes, Guitars, Violins, etc.); Vibrating reeds (Clarinets, Saxophones, Oboes, etc.); Vibrating labia using embochures (this is a way of saying: Blowing on belled mouthpieces such as used on Trumpets, Trombones, and Brass horns of any type, etc.); Vibrating resonant shapes (Bells, Tubes and Rods, etc.), and most recently: The use of the "loudspeaker" (which is a variation of the vibrating diaphragm), to produce SOUND that could be modulated in various ways so as to produce what has, in our time, come to be called "MUSIC".

Man has not always had the ability to make LIGHT, but the gap between the time that man first made SOUND and the time that man first made LIGHT has become inconsequential, for at this time, man has the ability to make both SOUND and LIGHT in quantities that make Artistic expression possible in both mediums.

It has presently become quite common for anyone to become, if not a MUSIC maker, at least a MUSIC appreciator.

It has also become possible for some, though it is not as common, to become, if not a VUSIC maker, at least a VUSIC appreciator.

We all have some knowledge of what MUSIC is, how to obtain it, and we all know that MUSIC has powers that are peculiar to the use of SOUND.

We are just now coming to the knowledge of what VUSIC is, how to obtain it, and soon all will know that it too, has powers that are peculiar to the use of LIGHT.

The next step was to put SOUND and LIGHT together to produce what is considered by many to possibly be the most exquisite Artistic expression medium in the world.

This time for is just now dawning. There are those who believe that it will inexorably come to be as common as MUSIC is at the present.

That is the concept, so how does one begin?

Expansion of the concept is an ongoing process. To try to list the correspondencies seems like a simple thing to do, until you come to realize the sheer size of the different particles that comprise MUSIC.

The process is daunting, but it doesn't need to be done all at once. We will most surely continue expanding the list of correspondencies forever. The finer we define one of these two Arts, the finer we define the other one.

To aid in this, there is a whole chapter in this WebPage called MUSIC=VUSIC where an ever growing list of correspondencies are listed. It will be updated and enlarged as time goes on.
